From First Steps to Fire Calls: New Dad Serves His Community at Garden City Fire Company

When Ryan Laliberte’s 15-month-old son, Cooper, took his first steps, Laliberte was juggling more than just baby-proofing and nap schedules— he was also preparing for his next emergency response with Garden City Fire Company.

By day, Laliberte is an Occupational Therapist, and by night, or whenever the call comes in, he’s a volunteer firefighter serving his community. This Father’s Day, Garden City Fire Company is highlighting Laliberte’s story as one of many kinds of volunteers who help keep the community safe.

“I was new to the area and looking for a meaningful way to give back,” said Laliberte, who moved from Philadelphia to Wallingford. “When I learned that an organization like this was operating entirely on volunteers, I was blown away. I had no idea how much went on behind the scenes.”

Since joining in 2023, Laliberte has participated in weekly training drills and responded to countless calls, all while adjusting to life as a first-time parent. “Being a dad is the best job I’ve ever had. Watching my son grow and learn, it’s just incredible,” he said.

Though he hasn’t yet earned his Firefighter 1 certification, Laliberte is well into the process and fully engaged in training. He recently completed the Hazardous Materials Awareness module at Montgomery County Fire Academy, fitting it into a schedule that includes a full-time job and parenting responsibilities.

“It’s a longer process when you’re juggling working full-time and having a family, but it’s absolutely doable. The department is incredibly supportive. Even if you can’t make every call, there are plenty of other ways to contribute,” said Laliberte.

Laliberte credits much of his ability to balance it all to his partner. “Having a supportive spouse is everything,” he said. “There’s no way I could do this without someone who believes in the importance of what I’m doing and helps make the time for it.”

Though his son hasn’t yet visited the station, Laliberte says it won’t be long. “He loves fire trucks. Now that he’s walking, I’m excited to bring him by. I want him to see what community service looks like up close.”

Laliberte encourages anyone, even those with busy lives, to consider volunteering. “You don’t have to respond to every call to make a difference,” he said. “There are so many ways to get involved, and the community is always grateful for the help.”

Garden City Fire Company welcomes new volunteers with or without experience. Training and gear are provided at no cost. Roles are available both in firefighting and on the administrative side, supporting events and fundraising efforts. To learn more or sign up, visit www.GardenCityFirefighter.org.
