Volunteer Spotlight: Bill Chism

Despite knowing each other throughout high school, it was not until Bill Chism joined Garden City Fire Company that he and his future wife began dating.

“It’s because of the firehouse that my wife and I are together,” said Bill, who has been with his wife, Denise, for 27 years.

Denise grew up at the firehouse and her father was a former chief. Bill’s mother was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for several years, but he initially joined Garden City to join the company’s softball team that several of his friends were a part of.

Bill has previously served as the fire company’s lieutenant for 25 years, captain for two years, trustee and float chairman. He spent 28 years running his own business as a general contractor until the opportunity to work as a firefighter and operator for Energy Transfer arose from his firehouse connections.

“I was building a deck for my chief, Pat O’Rourke, when he mentioned that his company was hiring firefighters and operators and that it might be something I would be interested in. I followed through with it and have been doing that for seven years now,” said Bill.

Volunteering with Garden City Fire Company is a rewarding way to give back to the community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether volunteers are representing the fire company at community events or fighting fires, Garden City could use more help!

“I will say that in all my years of volunteering, seeing how the kids are affected by us is priceless,” said Bill.

No experience is needed, and training and gear are provided to all volunteers. Learn more at www.GardenCityFirefighter.org.
