George Moore grew up at the Garden City Fire Company, and the moment he turned 16, he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined. This month marked George’s 30th year at the fire company.
“It’s been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember,” said George.
George is the fire company’s deputy chief and has been employed with the Upper Providence Township Police Department since 2003, currently serving as the detective-sergeant for the Upper Providence Township Criminal Investigations Unit.
“The direction the firehouse put me in, as far as helping others and working in emergency services, led to me becoming a police officer,” said George.
He has three children, and his oldest stepson, 27, previously volunteered as a junior firefighter. George’s favorite part about being at Garden City Fire Company is the family dynamic.
“Some of my best friends in my life have come from the firehouse. I was the best man at one of our member’s weddings,” he said.
Garden City Fire Company is always looking for new volunteers to serve as firefighters, fire police or administrative volunteers. No prior experience is needed to join, and training and gear are provided to all volunteers.
“Not everybody has to be an interior firefighter. There’s something for everybody. You can help with building maintenance, the company’s finances, or recruitment and retention. It’s not just getting on the fire trucks and going and putting out the fires,” George added.
