Volunteer Spotlight: George Moore Jr.

Ringing in 41 years with the Garden City Fire Company, George Moore Jr. reflects on his unique pathway to the organization, one that was a result of an affinity for the game of softball and became a lasting family legacy.

It was the summer of 1983 and new Wallingford resident George had started playing softball with some friends who were also members of the firehouse and its softball team. To join the league, one needed to be a member of a local fire or police organization, which led George straight to the Garden City Fire Company. His passion for firefighting followed shortly thereafter.

“When you join, it becomes your family. The positions that I held when I first joined really taught me leadership skills, responsibility and how to have a good work ethic,” said George.

George’s son, George Moore III, joined the department 11 years after his father and is the deputy chief. Back in June of this year, he celebrated 30 years of service with the organization.

“I’m very proud of him for the way he handles himself on the fire ground and the commitment that he’s made to the community,” said George.

Throughout his four decades of service, George has climbed through the ranks and served as engineer, captain, recording secretary, financial secretary and vice president.

In his earlier years, George recalls his favorite aspect of volunteering being the adrenaline rush he got riding on the fire truck’s tailboards. Now, it’s the tangible impact he and other volunteers make in their community, whether it’s saving one’s life or equipping them with fire prevention and safety knowledge.

“It’s just the satisfaction of doing a good job. Educating the public is a big thing. We hold an Open House once a year, and it’s nice to have people come in, meet our officers and actually experience some of the things we do,” he said.

Garden City’s annual fire prevention Open House, Fire Safety Night & Truck or Treat, will be held on Wednesday, October 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the station. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume for an exciting evening combining fire prevention education with fun activities for all ages.

Members who attend will also be able to connect with Garden City’s first responders and learn about volunteering with the company. Training and gear are provided, and no prior experience is needed to join.

“It really is a family atmosphere and everyone has each other’s backs. You don’t just have to be a firefighter, you can help out on the financial side too,” George said.
